As summer nears its conclusion Ip will take a trip to England, for once not in order to teach but rather to learn. Having been a sceptic against all those ideas that media academy is prone to put into students’ heads - especially all those mythologies by Roland Barthes and the apostles of semiology - Ip will exercise the opportunity to get a deeper view into the secrets of art. This time from a less agenda-driven point of view but rather in terms of appreciating art for its own merits. How can we cherish art when all the time we are told that Western culture needs to perish? How are all art forms connected? Is the so called seventh art only a short-lived spectacle that owes its existence to o fleeting technical novelty? These are just a couple of questions for which I hope to find some answers.
Also there is the question how social concepts can be turned into a coherent narrative.
As one gets older one realizes how precious many things are, that we inherited, yet we smash them like the bunch of spoiled brats that we are. I want to re-connect to the art of the great Masters of painting, music, theatre in order to preserve. Whenever you cut down a tree, remember: it will never grow again. Other trees might grow, but still it might take a hundred years. What has that to do with film? I shall find out.
